Blended Learning Program: Floor & Decor
THE NEED
Floor & Decor required a more structured, consistent, and scalable onboarding experience for new Sales Associates in their big‑box retail stores. The existing approach left too much variation from store to store, resulting in long learning curves, uneven product knowledge, and delayed productivity. To solve this, Carolyn created a blended learning program that combined eLearning, on‑the‑floor training, and manager validations into a single, cohesive two‑week journey.
DELIVERABLE
Carolyn produced a complete, ready‑to‑launch onboarding system, including:
-
Custom eLearning courses built specifically for Floor & Decor’s retail environment.
-
A learner workbook guiding hands‑on activities, product exploration, and customer‑interaction practice.
-
Manager validation checklists with scripted questions, performance indicators, and certification steps.
Together, these components formed a structured two‑week onboarding program that blended virtual learning, hands‑on practice, and leadership mentorship.
PROCESS
Carolyn designed the program by mapping the full set of skills, behaviors, and product knowledge required for Sales Associates to be successful. She then structured these into a blended sequence that allowed learners to build confidence progressively:
-
eLearning modules — foundational product knowledge, customer engagement skills, and store processes.
-
On‑the‑floor activities — guided practice with managers using a custom learner workbook.
-
Manager‑led coaching — real‑time feedback, modeling, and reinforcement.
-
Verbal validation — a structured conversation where managers confirm the associate can accurately explain key concepts and processes.
This approach ensured that learning wasn’t just consumed—it was practiced, coached, and demonstrated.
RESULTS
The program was enthusiastically received by both managers and new associates. Stores reported:
-
A two‑month reduction in the onboarding learning curve.
-
Faster readiness for customer interaction and sales support.
-
Increased productivity driven by earlier confidence and competence.
-
Stronger alignment between training, store expectations, and leadership coaching.
The blended design created a repeatable, scalable onboarding experience that improved performance and strengthened the overall employee experience.
